Training

The IARC Caribbean Cancer Registry Hub coordinates regional training workshops in topics that are of particular interest to the region or as a way of meeting an expressed or observed need.

Furthermore, the Hub facilitates the participation of Caribbean cancer registry staff in other available regional and international training opportunities.

Completed Training and Capacity-Building Activities

The IARC Caribbean Cancer Registry Hub has supported capacity building in population-based cancer registration across the Caribbean through regional face-to-face workshops, webinars, online courses, and facilitated participation in international training programmes. These activities have strengthened technical skills in cancer registration, data management, coding, staging, data quality, analysis, and reporting.

Regional Face-to-Face Training Workshops

The Caribbean Hub has conducted four regional face-to-face training workshops to strengthen the technical capacity of cancer registry personnel:

2016 – Basic Principles of Cancer Registration: Training in the fundamental principles and methods of population-based cancer registration.
2016 – CanReg5: Practical training in the use of CanReg5 software for cancer registry data management.
2018 – SEER*Stat: Training in the analysis and reporting of cancer registry data using SEER*Stat software.
2018 – Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Training to support the development and implementation of standardized cancer registry procedures.

Support for Participation in the NAACCR Webinar Series (2017–2022)

The Caribbean Hub provided financial support to enable cancer registry personnel from Caribbean countries and territories to participate in the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) Webinar Series.

The Caribbean Hub has also supported access to specialized online training opportunities, expanding professional development for cancer registry personnel throughout the region.

2021 – Summer School on Cancer Registration: Basic Principles and Methods (November): Online training covering the foundational principles and methods of cancer registration.
2024 – Caribbean ChildGICR Childhood Cancer Registration Course (October–November): Specialized training focused on childhood cancer registration.
2025 – GICR e-Learning Series (Launch): A comprehensive online learning programme covering essential aspects of cancer registration, including registry operations, coding, staging, data quality, analysis, and the use of cancer registry data.

The GICR e-Learning Series provides opportunities for continued professional development through self-paced online modules.
